2012 Volkswagen Tiguan Owner's Manual

4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive and two six-speed gearboxes Permanent all-wheel drive is absolutely essential when driving off-road. On paved streets, the intelligent all-wheel drive increases active safety. The Tiguan uses the latest generation of 4MOTION all-wheel drive. It switches manually or has an optional automatic six-speed transmission. Both transmissions meet special off-road requirements. For example, the manual transmission can be operated at engine speeds of 1,000 rpm or at vehicle speeds as low as 6.69 km/h; this is virtually equivalent to using a reduction gearbox. The automatic transmission provides a preset gear level; in off-road use, this prevents shifting to the next higher gear.
