The Toyota Highlander is based on the reinforced platform of the Camry and Avalon passenger models. The design features are an extra-stiff load-bearing steel body, rear independent suspension on double wishbones with McPherson struts, electric power steering with variable degree of reaction force. The design of the second generation was developed in the Californian design studio CALTY, taking into account the tastes of American customers. The sporty style is emphasized by elegant underlining on the front and rear fenders.

The base version, the Toyota Highlander, is offered with front-wheel drive. For a surcharge there is an upgraded full-time all-wheel-drive transmission with an inter-axle differential and a viscous clutch, and the control electronics of the directional stability system is now integrated with the electric power steering.
