The Avensis engine range has six units. Three 1.6, 1.8, and 2.0 liter gasoline engines develop 132, 147, and 152 hp, respectively. Moreover, the Japanese refusal from the variable valve timing system in favor of the throttle-free Valvematic mixing allowed to increase horsepower by 3-20% with a simultaneous 10-26% reduction in harmful emissions. Three 2,0 and 2,2 liters D-4D diesel engines (in two variants) develop 126, 150 and 177 hp.

In USA the Toyota Avensis is officially supplied only with two petrol engines of 1.8 and 2.0 liters. In the mixed cycle they consume from 6.6 to 7.1 liters of fuel. The 2-liter engine works only with a Multidrive S variator, and the 1.8-liter allows installing a 6-speed manual transmission.
