2014 Volkswagen Golf Owner's Manual
The Golf VII differs significantly from its predecessor both technically and in terms of design. If we believe the specialists of Volkswagen, the appearance of the car was designed “from scratch”, although it still demonstrates the continuity. And, as many notice, the hatchback makes much stronger emotional impression, than on photos. It, among other things, also increased in size: length is 4255 mm (+56 mm), width is 1799 mm (+13 mm), and the wheelbase is 2637 mm (+59 mm). The track is increased by 8 mm in front and 6 mm behind. Due to all these factors Germans managed to increase volume of the luggage compartment up to 380 liters and add 15 millimeters of extra space for knees of rear passengers.
One of the main areas of work on the seventh generation Golf for engineers was the struggle for the weight of the car. To do this, they had to seriously reconsider the design of the body and resort to the use of different materials, including porous and plastic. As a result, the hatchback lost almost 100 kg, becoming, in addition, more effective from an aerodynamic point of view. The engineers managed to reduce the drag coefficient from 0.31 to 0.27.
