2021 Dodge Challenger Owner's Manual
The precursor to the Challenger in the Dodge lineup was the Silver Challenger, a two-door, four-seat coupe produced in 1959 in a limited run.
The Chrysler Corporation division returned to using the Challenger name on a larger scale 11 years later, when the need to compete with Ford with its Mustang and Chevrolet with its Camaro became acute. As a result, after several years of development, the 1970 model year Dodge Challenger was shown to the public, designed by renowned craftsman Carl Cameron, creator of the 1966 Charger design.
The body was in the fashionable then form-factor “pony” – with an elongated hood and short “stern”. The car was produced in convertible and coupe bodies. The front end was crowned by two pairs of round headlamps, a narrow, three-bar grille, and a massive chrome bumper. The turn signals, in the fashion of the time, were located in the front bumper, just below the headlights. The hood was T-shaped with air intakes (for vehicles with engine capacity over 5.9 liters).
